President & Chief Executive Officer,
Hal is recognized as one of the legal community’s preeminent experts in the design, creation and implementation of Information Management Systems.
Following a successful career marketing word processing systems to law firms on the west coast in the early 80’s, Hal dedicated his efforts in the ensuing 25+ years to innovations in the document management field. In 1984 Hal was instrumental in the introduction of Summation to the Los Angeles legal market. In 1985 Hal co-founded the first off-shore coding company in theUS, effectively reducing the cost to index by over 50%. Considered a radical move at the time off-shore coding quickly became the standard.
In 1989 Hal teamed up with IPRO to redesign their scanning and image viewing software for use in the legal market. IPRO quickly became the market leader for delivering image based solutions to theUSlegal market and remains the standard today. Hal’s next major innovative contribution to discovery management came in 1990 when he convinced Jeff Lipsman, Dataflight Corp. founder and author of Concordance, to integrate his product with the IPRO image viewer. Hal worked with Jeff Lipsman (Concordance) andJim King(IPRO) to market the first image based document management system to be used in the legal industry. IPRO became the most successful national provider of e-discovery and imaging software. Concordance (used by over 65,000 litigation support professionals), was acquired by LexisNexis in 2006. IPRO and Concordance remain the two most widely used discovery management tools.
In 1992 Hal was recruited by Legal Information Technology (“LIT”), a start-up enterprise that brought cutting-edge technology to the legal community. With Hal’s assistance, LIT made a successful transition from the business of integrating PC’s and local area networks in law firms to becoming the leading provider of image based management systems and services. LIT was listed #36 on Inc. Magazine's 500 Fastest-Growing Companies in 1994. The Lead article in the magazine cited LIT’s ability to make the transition and adopt to change as a major factor in LIT’s rapid growth.
Under Hal’s tutelage and direction, LIT pioneered the use of imaging technology for discovery management and litigation support. During his tenure at LIT, Hal introduced some of the nation’s leading law firms and major corporation to the automation of the discovery process. Firms such as Cravath Swaine & Moore, Skadden Arps, Shearman & Sterling and corporations such as Caterpillar, IBM, Merck & Co and Novartis, just to name a few. The early implementation of discovery management systems in key law firms by LIT, gave its clients a technological edge, secured major litigation wins and helped save its corporate clients millions of dollars.
Following the sale of LIT to a NYSE corporation, Hal pursued consulting assignments. In 1999, working with Fluor Daniels, Hal and Jeff Lipsman designed a system to automate the indexing of over twenty million emails stored on tapes. In 2004 Hal was engaged by Pfizer to assist in the conversion of several hundred million native files to tiff images. This venture led to the founding of Everest Technologies in January of 2006. Everest quickly became a leading provider and innovator in the design, creation and implementation of discovery management systems. Everest, as a discovery management vendor, specializes in ESI processing, managed review and production.
